Camellia’s Tea House is a family business owned by brother and sister, Ajit and Lubna. We asked Lubna some of our questions about tea and how it all started. Discover her recommendations, favourites, and something you don’t know about tea!
What inspired you to start Camellia’s Tea House?
Natural living and a complementary approach to tackling ailments have always been a way of life for our family. For me, it only seemed right to pursue a career in the wellness space, and after qualifying as a homoeopath with further studies of medicinal herbs, the idea of creating a wellness tea room and brand was born.
Back then, blended herbal tea infusions were unavailable except for chamomile, mint etc. I wanted to introduce drinking herbal teas as an alternative health approach to other beverages whilst still tasting delicious. Ajit, a microbiologist who worked in corporate banking at that time, shared a similar passion, and together we created Camellia’s Tea House.

Is there something about tea that might surprise people?
Consuming herbal tea is nearly as old as humankind. Drinking caffeinated tea goes back thousands of years, it is steeped in history, and all variations of caffeinated teas come from the same plant – Camellia Sinensis.
Tea is now becoming a healthy alternative to drinking wine. Tea and wine are very similar in the way they are cultivated. Different regions of cultivation produce a wide variety of flavours, textures and characters.
How do you create a tea blend?
Firstly, you need to understand what you want to achieve from a blend – Will it carry any medicinal value, what will be the flavour profile, how will you be able to source the ingredients and will the elements combine well to create a formula? That works!
Do you prefer loose tea or tea bags?
We initially started Camellia’s Tea House as a loose leaf tea company because we believed it was healthier (teabags came with chemicals). It was challenging to bag in long loose leaf tea that offered a better flavourful cup of tea. Luckily, nowadays, many teabags are available in the market. It is accessible to source teabag material that’s free from chemicals, comes in various sizes to accommodate the longer leaf, and is made of sustainable material. We enjoy both loose leaf and teabags, depending on what comes first at hand.

How can your herbal teas increase wellbeing?
Herbal teas generally have an alkaline effect on the body, which is essential for maintaining good health. We have specifically designed our herbal teas using traditional botanicals known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral compounds, which are believed to help boost the immune system.
Herbs have been used for centuries to treat certain conditions; nowadays, they are backed by scientific evidence. We have worked with third-party medical consultants to create our Therapy Tea range designed to target chronic diseases, those living under heavy medication, and maintain good health.
Which tea would you recommend for those new to drinking tea?
I would recommend Jasmine Bai Mao Hou, a jasmine flavour green tea, or Rose Pouchong, a black tea infused with rose petals. Both teas offer delicate notes and are not too strong for a new tea drinker.
What are your personal favourites?
Now I am drinking Digest and Energise as I love the warm spice and refreshing mint notes. I usually drink this hot after a meal to help with digestion. I also love Signature Earl Grey, my daily afternoon pick-me-up! Some of my other favourite teas are Relax and Recover before bedtime (i enjoy this iced, especially in the summer), Balance for hormonal support and Radiant for skin outbreaks.
