Preferably, rolling should take place before or after training, to complement your stretch programme. Ideally you should work each area of the body for approx. 5 minutes.
If you ever see our gym team sitting you might notice they have tucked a massage ball under their glutes. The reason for their dedication to rolling is clear….self-myofascial release (foam rolling) brings numerous benefits:
- improved circulation
- increased muscle function,
- increased range of motion through joints,
- quicker recovery,
- improved flexibility
- relief from tight muscles
The body has a web like structure of connective tissue (fascia). Injury, trauma or inflammation can cause the fascia to become “stuck” to the muscles underneath. These adhesions may result in pain, soreness and a reduced range of movement. Self-myofacial release is a type of soft tissue massage which incorporates stretching and massage of the fascia.
Preferably, rolling should take place before or after training, to complement your stretch programme. Ideally you should work each area of the body for approx. 5 minutes.
