Hip mobility refers to the range of movement we have in our hip joint. The muscles supporting our hip joints are fundamental to our overall mobility. If we lack movement in our hips, our bodies compensate by moving differently. These altered, imbalanced movement patterns increase our risk of developing postural issues, knee pain and back pain.
Sitting for prolonged periods is the primary cause of stiff hips. Whilst seated our hips are flexed, this causes tightness in our hip flexors and weakness in our glutes and hamstrings.
Three key steps to improving hip mobility
- Move more and take regular breaks from sitting
- Stretch your hip flexors and quads
- Strengthen your glutes and hamstrings
